Top 6 Bookkeeping Tips

Tip #1 – Keep It Separate

When it comes to bookkeeping, having a place for everything and having everything in its place is half the battle. We advise our clients to have a place for their receipts, purchase orders and paperwork in the office and if needed in their car as well to help keep business papers separate from personal. This will reduce the mental energy of scouting about for missing receipts.

Tip #2 – Get Set Up Right

Setting up your books is the foundation of good bookkeeping. If you need help putting a proper system in place, talk to one of our bookkeepers today to see how we might be of assistance in getting your business on a solid path. They will be able to suggest systems and software that will get you moving in the right direction.

Tip #3 – Know Your Deadlines

Having your year-end and GST filing dates clearly laid out will set the pace for your bookkeeping goals. We encourage our clients to put these reminders in place so that they know when they have to submit their work to us so we can have any bookkeeping tasks completed in time for their filing dates. Many clients will work with an online calendar to remind them of check points and deadlines to keep them on time and on task.

Tip #4 – Daily Tasks – Track Your Time and Mileage

Tracking your time and your employees’ time on a daily basis. As an employer, ensuring your employees are on board to record and submit is critical for accuracy as their work is directly tied to your bottom line. The same goes for owners. Tracking time and mileage daily should be the norm in most business. Fortunately, there is a variety of apps and software pieces that can make time tracking easier than ever.

Tip #5 –Monthly and Quarterly Tasks

We suggest keeping up monthly or quarterly with bookkeeping as a matter of discipline to ensure your business stays up to date. Sometimes our clients call on us for weekly tasks, sometimes we oversee their books quarterly or even yearly. Whatever you have decided, consistency is key to keeping up to date.

Tip #6 – Have a Team

Having a team to support you in the bookkeeping tasks you are have decided not to take on, allows you the time to stay focused on the tasks that make your company money. In many cases, hiring out bookkeeping can even save a business money. We look forward to discussing your needs. Call or visit us today.
